PHOTOGRAPHY
The Medium Of The Moment
|
According to ARTnews in their February, 2003 issue, photography is "the medium of the moment". That's something that Dave, co-owner of Woodworkers Auction, has believed since he first picked up the camera that he received for his 19th birthday. In 1999, Man Ray's Glass Tears (1932-33) sold for substantially more than a million dollars. That sale has been followed by several other sales in the seven figure range. Richard Woodward of the New York Times called photography the "New, New Thing in the art market". While weston Naef, the photography curator for the J. Paul Getty Museum says, "It has taken us all by surprise". The economy is slowing, but art auctions are seeing strong sales in the area of photography. It is spread across the board and sales include young artists and unknowns as well as photographers known worldwide. The variety of subjects ranges all across the board from common subjects like a pile of used tires at a gas station to landscapes, people and flowers. Another phenomena in the world of are is digital canvas prints. These are commonly referred to as 'Giclee' which simply means that ink has been applied directly to canvas using a high-resolution ink jet printer. These afford an economical and unique piece of art to the home decorator. Photographs, when computer enhanced and printed on canvas, very often appear to be an oil painting or watercolor. Just above is one of Dave's giclee's created from a photograph selecterd from his body of work. If you'd like to see more of Dave's collection just click on the link below. The Photography of David Eller David's prints are available either framed or unframed and are reasonably priced. |
