Well known for the superb colors of its foliage in autumn. The bark is a dappled pale brown and exfoliates with age revealing a grey orange and brown color. The small leaves (which resist scorching during drought) have 3 short lobes close together - hence the name Tri-dent. Native to Japan where it is used extensively for bonsai. Has 2" long x 1" wide foliage that is more oval than the European Beech. The foliage turns brown in the fall and remains on the tree until spring when new growth pushes off the old leaves. The smooth grey-white bark is typical of other Beeches. Deciduous. Also known as Sacred Bamboo and is related to the Barberry. This tough as nails evergreen has fine lacey foliage which turns bronze and red in winter. It has unbranched reed-like stems. In spring new foliage appears as bright bronze red and is soon followed by large creamy white flowers. In summer, clusters of bright green berries appear and by late summer, the berries ripen to a bright red. Does well indoors. Flowering Crabapples are one of the best flowering trees for bonsai. They produce beautiful 1/2" red fragrant flowers covering the entire tree in early spring before the foliage appears. The foliage is small and lobed. Little green pomes (apples) in summer, derived from the enlargement of the entire flower receptacle which becomes fleshy. The fruit ripens to all different colors in the fall when the foliage begins to turn shades of yellow, orange and red. The bark is fibrous and has a reddish-brown color with small flat ridges and shallow furrows.
