Bougainvillea (bougainvillea 'pink pixie')

In 1768 Admiral Loius de Bougainville discovered the vine that bears his name. Through the ensuing years, this Brazillian beauty has assumed its rightful place as one of the most popular, spectacular and most beautiful tropical plants. The vibrant pink color comes not from the small white tubular flowers, but from the three large paper-like bracts that surround each flower. Hence the nick name "paper flower". The Bougainvillea will typically lose some leaves for a short period during the winter due to the lower lighting conditions. Under high lighting conditions the colorful bracts will adorn this tree trained vine almost constantly and will persist for weeks. Great indoor bonsai. 35 years old. 32"x31"x42". Japanese Five Needle Pine(pinus parvifolia)

This Japanese White Pine is the most commonly used Pine for bonsai in Japan. It is an evergreen with very short stiff needles forming blue/green tufts of foliage at the branch tips creating an overall fine texture to the tree silhouette. The brownish red cones are one to four inches long. The needles grow in groups of five which is why it is known as five-needle-pine. Hardy. Keep outdoors. 19 years old. 12"x8"x23". Heavenly Bamboo (nandina domestica 'firepower')

Also known as Sacred Bamboo and is related to the Barberry. This tough as nails evergreen has fine lacey foliage which turns bronze and red in winter. It has unbranched reed-like stems. In spring new foliage appears as bright bronze red and is soon followed by large creamy white flowers. In summer, clusters of bright green berries appear and by late summer, the berries ripen to a bright red. Does well indoors. Walking Stick (corylus avellana 'contorta')

The Filbert or Hazelnut is generally grown for its tasty nuts, but not this one. 'Contorta", better known as the Walking Stick, has beautifully twisted and contorted weeping branches that are particularly striking when dusted with snow. In late winter, 2-3" long, yellowish brown catkins appear, dangling like ornaments from the wiry skeleton. In spring and summer and early autumn, it has large crinkly leaves so dense it hides the exaggerated corkscrew appearance of the limbs. Decideous. Keep outdoors. 12 years old. 18"x27"x29".
