Japanese Mock Orange (pittosporum tobria variegata)

The Japanese flowering Mock Orange has thick glossy evergreen leaves that are oblong and in whorls and that are creamy white and green in color. Flowers are rather small, creamy white and very fragrant and give off a fragrance similar to that of the Orange Blossom, hence the name Mock-Orange. Also known as the Chinese Juniper. This needled evergreen is tolerant of a wide variety of soils and is dioecious which means that there are separate male and female plants. Shimpaku is a naturally irregular vase shaped Juniper which we grow into a traditional upright style. The Shimpaku has attractive year round foliage and its dark green needles are soft to the touch. Hokkaido Elm (ulmus parvifolia 'hokkaido')

Native to Japan and Korea, the Hokkaido Elm is a Chinese Elm, not troubled by the Dutch Elm disease that has destroyed so many other species. It is extremely slow growing and will only grow to about 36" tall in nature. The Hokkaido forms a rugged trunk with a corky bark that flakes off in rounded plates. This cultivar of ulmus has the tiniest leaf of all Elms (only 3/8" long) and the are short-stalked, oval with a slightly pointed tip and toothed margins, bright green on the upper surface, lighter green underneath. Podocarpus (podocarpus macrophyllus)

Also known as Buddhist Pine or Chinese Yew. Podocarpus is a dense evergreen with pointed, leathery, dark green leaves arranged on stiff, symmetrical branches. The tree which is unisexual, has male flowers in cones and female flowers composed of cylindrical thickened scales. The fruits are edible, pedunculate, fleshy and brightly colored. New foliage comes in a light green color that turns darker with age. Our tree is trained in the traditional bonsai style. Grows very well albeit slowly indoors. 22 years old. 16"x13"x27". Dwarf Black Olive (bucida spinosa)

Native to the Caribbean and parts of Florida. Not the edible olive that we all know and love, but does produce a small, black seed-capsule. Flowers are insignificant. An evergreen tree with a smooth trunk when young. Grows normally with a dense full canopy. Ours is trained in the traditional bonsai style with a curved, knobby, lichenous spotted trunk with exposed roots. The lush, dark bluish/gree, leathery leaves can be over 2" long and are clustered at the branch tips, sometimes mixed with 1" long spines found along the branches. Loves the sun and heat. Trident Maple (acer buergerianum)

Well known for the superb colors of its foliage in autumn. The bark is a dappled pale brown and exfoliates with age revealing a grey orange and brown color. The small leaves (which resist scorching during drought) have 3 short lobes close together - hence the name Tri-dent. The spring flowers are inconspicuous and the new growth is often bronze to purple. Very popular for bonsai because of the small handsome leaves. Deciduous.
