Flowering Crabapples are one of the best flowering trees for bonsai. They produce beautiful 1/2" red fragrant flowers covering the entire tree in early spring before the foliage appears. The foliage is small and lobed. Little green pomes (apples) in summer, derived from the enlargement of the entire flower receptacle which becomes fleshy. The fruit ripens to all different colors in the fall when the foliage begins to turn shades of yellow, orange and red. Winter brings a nice twiggy skeletal outline punctuated by the fruit which persists throughout the winter. They are easy to grow and quite pest resistant. Decideous. Japanese Five Needle Pine(pinus parvifolia)

This Japanese White Pine is the most commonly used Pine for bonsai in Japan. It is an evergreen with very short stiff needles forming blue/green tufts of foliage at the branch tips creating an overall fine texture to the tree silhouette. The brownish red cones are one to four inches long. The needles grow in groups of five which is why it is known as five-needle-pine. Hardy. Keep outdoors. 19 years old. 12"x8"x23". Also known as Sacred Bamboo and is related to the Barberry. This tough as nails evergreen has fine lacey foliage which turns bronze and red in winter. It has unbranched reed-like stems. In spring new foliage appears as bright bronze red and is soon followed by large creamy white flowers. In summer, clusters of bright green berries appear and by late summer, the berries ripen to a bright red. Does well indoors.
