HANDCARVED BOXES OF NAIRI SAFARYAN

These handcarved boxes can only be considered objects of art. Their intricate details, carved
from a single block of wood defy any other classification. While Nairi likes to refer to himself
as the People's Master Woodcarver, his work shows him to be an artist extroardinaire.

As you view this exquisite piece, it is hard to imagine that it sprang from one piece of pear wood. But using the influence of the grape vines so prevalent in Armenia, Nairi crafts the block into a near perfect representation of grape vines.
The block of wood is first sliced into two pieces to allow for the inset lid and the hollow interior. Then he lovingly begins carving the details of the vine and leaves. Large grape canes form the feet of the box, while the grape stems encompass the sides, sprouting tendrils of the vine, the fruit and the branches. Curving, realistically formed leaves grace the top of the box.
This piece is finished with beeswax and left unstained.

In Nairi's hands, a piece of samshit wood from Georgia in the Russian Caucuses becomes an unusually shaped box. The intricate petals of the carved roses are even more amazing when we realize that according to Nairi, samshit wood is so hard that it is similar to carving in stone. The wood is fine grained and no finish is used on it.

Notice the intricate leaf clusters surrounding the detailed petals of the unfolding rose on this box. Each object is masterfully true to the detail of the original plant.
Nairi has a sense of humor in his carving. In this piece the lid is supported by an inchworm with tiny carved feet.
Again the piece is crafted from samshit wood. Therefore the piece is not stained and the only finish is a light coating of beeswax.
The piece measures 5 1/2" long, 2 1/4" wide and 3 3/8" tall. You can see the inner hollow of the piece and an enlarge version by clicking on the image.
Looking at a single block of pear wood, Nairi saw the unusual round box featuring once again the grape vines of his native Armenia.Grape canes support the body of this box carved with the stems, fruit and branches of the grapevine. Notice the delicate veins carved into each leaf. The vines are layered over the complete piece to form the unique shape of this box.
The only finish is a light beeswax leaving the piece unstained and open to the beautiful display of the natural wood. It measures 6 1/4" in diameter and 4 1/2" in height.
