NAIRI'S HANDCARVED CUPS & PLATES
These handcarved cups and plates from
the artist Nairi Safaryan are reminiscent of days gone by,
and representative of an almost lost art. It is common to see these designs
in silver or other metal
but extremely rare from a woodcarver. The designs are far more intricate than
is ordinarily seen.

A
single branch from a peach tree is the foundation for this Wine Cup. Vines
and tendrils support the bowl of the cup while winding around and down
the stem. A gnarled grape trunk forms the stem leading into a firm base.
None of the pieces are attached, rather all have been carved from the
single piece of wood. Just a simple beeswax finish beautifies the wood without benefit of any stain or other finish. The complete piece measures 6 3/4" high by 2 1/2" in diameter. Inside it measures 3" deep by 1 3/4" diameter. Click on the image to see a larger version. |
| This
beautiful goblet is enhanced with an inner coating of gold while preserving
the integrity of the handcarving. What is most amazing is how even the
precious metal does not detract from the beauty of the cup. Just click on the image to see a larger version of this image. |

This
miniature cup is incredibly detailed for it's size, which you can imagine
from the size of the quarter placed near it. It has all the properties
of it's larger versions, yet remains delicate and detailed. It's grapevines and leaves and the gnarled trunk that forms the stem are all carved from a small branch of samshit wood. The detailing on this piece is more amazing when you consider the density of the samshit wood which comes from a slow growing tree with very dense wood. The leaves, tendrils and fruit are very thin and fine. All of the piece is covered with a fine coat of beeswax. This cup measures 3 3/4" high by 1 3/4" diameter. The interior surface is 1 3/8" deep by 1 1/4" in diameter. Just click the image for a larger version of the picture. |
| It's
hard to imagine ever eating from this beautiful plate, but it might be
a beautiful serving tray or wall decoration. The half-border displays
graceful leaves, fruit and tendrils of the grapevine which is a common
subject for Nairi's work. The delicate grapevines form a filigree that appear to be alive. And, the natural grain of the wood provides interest for the body of the plate. Unfortunately, we don't have all the details of this piece as to size and wood. However, you can view and enlarged version of the piece by clicking on the image to the right. |

Intricately carved and fantastically
detailed, this decorative plate is crafted from peach tree wood found
in Armenian orchards. The original shape was lathe cut and then the
grape motive was carved into that piece. It is as all of Nairi's work
is carved from a single block of wood. |
