WOODWORKER OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER 2001 II
Tim Wade of Llanafan Fawr, Wales

You saw the small one man boats in the movie Braveheart, and guess who made those - Tim of course. These small boats are called coraccles. Just to the right is a picture of Tim affixing the struts to the gunwale of one of these boats. Coracles are almost a basket similar to the small basket that, according to the Bible, Moses was placed in when his mother put him in the river to save him. There are several versions of coracles and various materials are used. Tim builds Shropshire coracles from sawn green ash laths. If you like, you can visit the Amazing Projects page for all the details. Now and then you'll find one of Tim's coracles up for bid on the auction.

Tim teaches several woodworking courses at his Woodland Skills Centre which he began in 1987 on his own acres of woodland. These are vacation based courses which are run in the Summer. He teaches coracle building, chairmaking, charcoal making, timber conversion and spoon and bowl turning. In addition, he employs other tutors to teach buying and managing a small woodland and willow basketry. 'The courses give people the opportunity to learn new skills, broaden their outlook on woodlands and generally influence their attitude to life,' Tim says. You can get more information about these courses by visiting Tim's website at http://www.greenwoodworking.co.uk . Or learn more by visiting the Earth & People Friendly Projects page.
Just to the left and below we see Tim making charcoal and some of his students engaged in various crafts.

One of the greatest advocates of greenwoodworking is Tim Wade. He has purchased a Logosol, which is a portable sawmill. This allows him to mill logs which would be inaccessible if he couldn't take the sawmill to the tree. Tim says, 'I have milled Oak, Ash, Elm, Spruce, Lime, Beech and Larch, which have all been used for my various products. After a days milling, I have a feeling of great satisfaction, when I look at a stand of planked timber from my own woodlands. As I sit and relax, enjoying my woodland, I usually whittle a wooden flower. I always return home with a great sense of achievement.' Here you see Tim and his Logosol at work.
One of Tim's proudest accomplishments, that the portable sawmill has helped, is his Greenwood Training Project, which he operates in Wales and some of the underdeveloped countries of the world. The object is to teach people various traditional woodland skills and in the poorer countries, aid them in becoming self supporting. Green woodworking makes use of small diameter timber which might otherwise be wasted. Green wood is more durable than seasoned timber because it is less likely to split since it is cut along the grain of the wood and the drying out process happens naturally without stressing the wood. One of Tim's most successful projects was the Self-Help Project on Pukapuka in the Cook Islands which are located in the southern Pacific Ocean. You can read about this project in the
Earth & People Friendly Woodworking Projects section.
