WOODWORKER OF THE MONTH - NOVEMBER 2001
Tim Wade of Llanafan Fawr, Wales

The awards Tim has earned are almost as prolific as his talents and all of them are well earned. Here's the short list:
1993 - Crafts Council of Wales Special Award to develop a high tech steaming bending system.

1994 - Winner of The Welsh Tourism Environmental Award
1994 - Winner of The Prince of Wales Environmental Award (This is the one you see Tim receiving from Prince Charles at the right)
1994 - Winner of the Country Living Rural Business Award
1995 - A Sir Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship to central Europe
1995 - Made an Honorary member of B.A.F.P.A.A.A.

1996 - Winner of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarships
1996 - Presented with a Churchill Medallion by the Duchess of Kent
1996 - Winner of the Pol-Roger Award
1996 - Coppice Association Award "The best training centre in Great Britain".
The Sir Winston Churchill Travel Fellowship took him to Slovakia and the Czech Republic of central Europe. If you'd like to visit the seldom seen traditional lifestyles and work of these areas, you can read Tim's Diary posted on the Diary of a Traveling Woodworker page.

Tim is a founding member of The Association of Pole Lathe Turners and The British Friends of The Kezmarok Wood School. In addition, he is a founding member of Woodland Heritage the Coppice Association, and The Greenwood Trust. He is also a member of Wales Tourism

Many commissions have come Tim's way. To the left you see The Bardic Chair made from Oak and Elm, and handcarved for the National Eisteddfod in Neath 1994. The chair is given to the best Welsh poet.
His other commissions include:
Public seating and tables for the Brecon Beacons National Park.
Brecon canal steam bent lock gates.
Woodland trust seating in the woods commission.
Coed Cymru, conference chairs.
Production of treen and wooden bygones for the Welsh National Museum.
A high altar for a church in Bratislava, Slovakia, and many private commissions for furniture and carvings in Britain and Europe.
Just to the left is an example of the church chairs Tim frequently builds.

When Tim relaxes at the end of a long day, he hangs out at a 1,000 year old English Pub called the Red Lion Inn. You see it pictured to the right.
If you'd like to learn more about this awesome structure and it's history, just visit the Unusual Buildings & Designs page. Recently, Tim sent an email saying he had a couple of brews set up for Dave and I, but since we haven't gotten there yet, I'll wager a guess he already drank them.

Tim has two great websites for you to visit. Here are the links.

If you'd like some really interesting conversation, or you want to comment on Tim's work, or ask a question simply email him at tim@greenwoodworking.co.uk .
