MAKING A WELSH STICK BACK CHAIR - PAGE 4

ASSEMBLY OF SEAT

Dry assemble legs into seat and mark positions for stretcher holes about half way along length of leg. Using a brace and 12mm (1/2in) bit, drill holes for stretchers. Line the drill parallel to seat to give drilling angle. Cut stretchers to length and turn down tenons to 12mm (1/2in). It's a good idea to number all components to relevant positions. When banging the components together, use a rubber mallet to avoid damage.
With a tenon saw, cut 38mm (1 1/2in) long down the centre of the top of each leg. Cut four wedges ready, assemble so that wedges go across the grain of the seat. It's a very good idea to do dry run assembly first, to check that everything fits together well. Then assemble with glue; bang wedges in; clean up excess glue and leave to dry. Cut top of wedges off.

ASSEMBLY OF TOP OF CHAIR

Cut slots for wedges on the top and bottom of front sticks and the tops of six other side sticks. Dry assemble first, then with glue. Cut top of wedges off when thoroughly dry.
Finish the chair with fine wire wool. With a rag apply several coats of Danish oil, which will protect and enhance the wood.
Good luck with the project. If you feel you need more guidance, you can always book on to one of my courses.
