AFRICAN MAHOGANY

Timber
producing areas of West coast of Africa. Predominantly Ivory Coast, Ghana
and Nigeria. Likes drier areas. |
| THE
TREE |
Grows
to 100 to 130 feet. It's diameter is 36 to 48 inches. It's bole may often
be twisted. |
| COLOR |
Heartwood
is light to deep brown, sometimes pink before turning to dark brown. Savanna
grown is darker than forest grown. Sapwood is straw or pink colored. |
| GRAIN |
Interlocked,
often wildly irregular. Texture is moderately coarse. |
| USES |
Turnings,
mouldings, furniture and interior uses. |
| POSITIVE
PROPERTIES |
Naturally
resistant to decay. Boring good if not wild grain. Mortises easily if
straight grain. Moulds well. Planes well unless very irregular. Polishes
nicely. Good results with hand tools. Routing and recessing good. Responds
well to sanding. Screwing ease is good. Turns well. Seasong slowly but
nicely. Hard and strong. Glues easily. |
| NEGATIVE
PROPERTIES |
May
check, warp or cup during drying. May be uneven wth excessive shrinkage
and high distortion during drying. Poor steam bending. Material with irregular
grain may not dress smoothly. Medium preservative. Logs can have brittleheart
or softheart. Heartwood is subject to powder-post beetle attack. Trees
and logs are vulnerable to forest longhorn beetle. |
