AFRICAN MAHOGANY

and Central parts of Africa, such as Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. |
| THE
TREE |
Grows
to about 100 feet with trunk diameter of 36 to 60 inches. Bole is straight,
cylindrical and branch-free for 50 or 60 feet. |
| COLOR |
Heartwood
bright red or pink in cutting. Dries or fades to light pink-brown. Will
mature to golden brown. Sapwood is lighter, but darkens to about the same
as heartwood. Wood is lustrous. |
| GRAIN |
Usually
interlocked and can be wavy and irregular. Ordinarily striped, but can
be fiddleback. Medium to uniform texture. |
| USES |
Furniture,
cabinets, carvings, interiors and mouldings. |
| POSITIVE
PROPERTIES |
Heartwood
moderately decay resistant. Weathers very well. Responsive to boring.
Has good carving properties. Glues well. Good moulding properties. Polishes
nicely. Routing and recessing good on straight grains. Turns fairly well.
Dries rapidly with little degrade. Sanding qualities good. Pre-boring
required for screws. Handles easily with hand tools. |
| NEGATIVE
PROPERTIES |
Nailing
properties are variable and may require pre-boring. Tension wood may be
present. May be difficult to mortise. Saws can bend during rip sawing
or burn during cross-cutting. Wooly finish may occur if saw maintenance
is not stressed. |
