AFRICAN MAHOGANY
(Khaya Ivorensis)

SOURCE Various areas of Africa.
THE TREE Rises to a height of over 100 feet.
COLOR Light to deep reddish brown.
GRAIN Straight to interlocked. Texture is medium to coarse.
USES Furniture, cabinet making, office, shop, boatbuilding, laminates, plywoods and veneers.
POSITIVE PROPERTIES Moderate blunting on cutters. Good nailing, screwing and gluing properties. Stains and polishes to a nice finish. Moderately durable. Dries rapidly with little distortion except where tension wood is present.
NEGATIVE PROPERTIES Low stiffness and shock resistance. Poor bending qualities. May have brittle or soft heartwood which can fracture. Brittle quality and interlocking grain can cause wooliness. Susceptible to insects. Resistant to preservative.
