ALBERT BIERSTADT
Albert Bierstadt, a German landscape artist, migrated to the United States in 1832
with his parents.  He took as his subject matter the vast mountains of North
America.  His work was exhibited in Boston, and shortly after that he returned to
Germany  in 1853 to study at the Dusseldorf Akademie.  He returned to the United
States in 1857 and began traveling the West in 1858.  He created his paintings in his
New York studio from sketches and oil studies that he completed during his trips
to the West.  Quite often his paintings reflect an exaggerated portrayal of the
landforms and atmosphere he found there.  His paintings were extremely
popular in the 1860's and 1870's.
