Fernando Botero was born
in Medellin, Columbia in 1932. He is known for expanding the
figures in his pictures while compressing the space around them. His
subjects quite often
appear humorous but with a social commentary or political overtone. The
first exhibition
of his work was at the Leo Matiz Gallery in Bogota in 1951. The 1993
exhibition of his
sculpture at the Champs Elysees was the first by a non-French artist. Botero
has studied
fresco technique and it is quite apparent in his work. Influence of the
Italian Renaissance
is also very obvious in his work.
