WILLIAM ADOLPHE BOUGUEREAU
1825 - 1905
William Bouguereau
cared enough about art to put himself through the Ecole des Beaux-Arts
by being a bookeeper for a merchant and as a lithographic label colorer
for a grocer. His leisure was spent in drawing from memory. During
his career, he created over 700 works of art and achieved financial success
with his art. But, he never forgot how hard he had to struggle for
his art, and he assisted many young artists. Studying form and technique
and classical sculpture and painting strongly influenced his own work.
His creations were the result of his extensive study of his subject and
numerous sketches of the piece. The love of children, domestic life
and rich color are the hallmarks of his work.
