PAUL CEZANNE

Paul Cezanne is considered a Post Impressioonist painter.  Even though he was a contemporary of the Impressionists, he was never really a part of the Impressionist movement, preferring to
create "something more solid and durable, like the art of museums".  He was rejected when he
tried to submit his work to the recognized Impressionists SALON.  His paintings of the
1865-1870 dealt with bizarre subjects.  His works in early 1870 saw a loosening of brushstrokes and a lightening in color.  Late in the 1870's his brushtrokes were grouped in parallel and
hatched forms.  In his late phase, he lived solitary in Aix and concentrated on still lifes,
bathers, and landscapes.  By the time of his death on October 22, 1906, he had succeeded
in being an influence on the 'Fauves' and 'Cubists'.
