COVE FORT BEDROOMS

Here are pictures of one of the focal points of the living arrangements
at the old Cove Fort. It's easy to imagine snuggling up for warmth in
one of these magnificent old beds next to a roaring fire in the fireplace.

This wonderful old bed features an elegantly shaped headboard and very colorful bedding. Furs similar to the one you see cast so casually on the bed are found throughout the whole house. There are actually two beds in this room (you can just see the corner post of the other on the right), but this one has location ---- right next to the fireplace where you would stay extra toasty warm. There are fireplaces in every room to ward off the nasty Winter chill they experienced here. The washstand is stragtegically placed near the fire, thereby insuring a bit of at least room temperature water to freshen up in the morning.
This room has a single bed pictured to the left. It was a guest room intended for use by Brigham Young when he visited. Having only a single bed insured his privacy and allowed small tables and chairs to be placed around the room so he could hold audiences with people wishing to see him. The beautiful quilt hanging over the footboard of the bed is characteristic of the beautiful needlework you see throughout the rooms of the fort. I neglected to ask what the pillows were stuffed with. Feathers of some sort would be the likely thing, although not necessarily goose.
This is a beautiful headboard, and with those stacked pillows it looks very inviting. However, when you consider that very often three people shared one small bed like this, it couldn't have been very comfortable. Once you climb in, you'd better be sure you are situated, because I doubt if there was much turning over without a whole lot of complaining from your bed partners. You could only hope that everyone bathed on some sort of regular basis. The guy in the middle would be a bit cramped, but at least he wouldn't have to worry about being the one left with no covers.
