SALVADOR DALI
(1904 - 1989)
Salvador Dali was born in Spain in 1904. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid,
but he was expelled from it in 1923 as a disciplinary measure. Cubism and Futurism
influenced his work, and he held his first one man show in Barcelona in 1925.
The writing of the screenplay for Bunuel's Un Chien Andalou in 1928, influenced
his acceptance by the Surrealists. Dali had a flare for getting publicity amidst scandals
and he was welcomed by the Surrealists for his ability to counterbalance the groups'
political difficulties. Dali was devoted to developing his 'paranoic-critical' method
which he described as a 'spontaneous method of irrational knowledge based
on the critical and systematic objectivation of delirious associations and
interpretations'. I think it's probably easier to just look at his work than to try to
understand that! He made many extreme political statements and had a fascination
with Hitler, which finally strained his relations with the Surrealists around 1934. The
break finally came when he declared support for Franco in 1939. 1936 saw Dali switch
back to a more classical style. Finally, he married his wife, Gala, in 1958 after knowing
her since 1929. She was his third wife and became his muse, his model andhis agent.
In 1965, he began sculpting in brass and crystal, using his paintings as inspiration. The
myth of Dali and his genius is propagated by the creation, by the artist himself, of the
Dali museum at Figueras. His 'figures in figures' paintings are still very popular.
