APRIL'S WOODWORKERS OF THE MONTH

DEE & DOC MCNEELY
TWO PAW STUDIO

It all started with the Las Vegas Woodworking Show. That's where we met Dee & Doc McNeely, and they
changed our outlook about woodworking, carving, sculpting, and engraving forever. Just on the outskirts
of Las Vegas, Nevada is a magical world known as Two Paw Studio, where Dee & Doc wield their high
speed carving and engraving tool known as the Powercrafter! And best of all, they teach other people
how to create amazing artwork with it also. Come with us for a tour of Doc & Dee's world.

Over on the left you see Doc hard at work on one of the gunstocks he carves. He's one half of the team at Two Paw Studio. Dee, the other half of the team, describes their partnership this way, "Our partnership was formed in October of 1962, beginning a "beary" nice friendship. We headed for Colorado in a covered wagon, in January of 1963 during a snow storm. Doc built a 6 foot frame on the back of the 1951 Dodge truck and covered all our earthly belongings with a tarp. We truly did look like a covered wagon. Our "wagon's" only heat was a Coleman Lantern hung on a knob on the dash board. The lantern was covered with a gallon can held on with wire to dampen the light so Doc could see to drive. We wore layers of clothes and gloves to keep warm. Eight states and over 40 moves later, our various attempts at our own business began to succeed as we started our engraving and carving venture in Montana. Moving to Las Vegas in 1989, we added 6 more moves to our current studio.

In 1993 we were authorized by Paragraphics to teach carving and engraving classes, and later training for Powercrafter. We have held hundreds of courses to date with students from all over the world."

That's Dee over there on the right with three samples of her favorite type of carving. In her own words, "My favorite type of project is relief carving on an ostrich shell (the same techniques that you would use to relief carve on wood with a little more challenge.) I have recently found that carving raised wooden leaves loosely lying on top of one another and with a myriad of ways to curl the leaves is fascinating and fun to carve."

"We are very blessed to have a large studio at our residence in the NW section of Las Vegas. Since we work by appointment only, it allows us to be gone several days at a time and still maintain a business. We can use email and voice mail when we are out of state teaching. The technological wonders of the times are great."

According to Dee, "Doc's Grandad was a cabinetmaker and Doc has always had an interest in wood. My interest came when I found that you can follow a 'study cast or go by' to make a wood carving and most of us can carve if we have a desire to (at least with a good teacher you can)."

Doc's favorite wood is walnut (I'm with him!) while Dee's is Alder. She likes the smooth grain and the relative softness. She was impressed with the basswood, but it was a little too soft for her taste.

Doc teaches a beginner knife engraving course. He has varied experience with wood, glass, plexiglass as well as metal. His work has taken several Grand Champion awards.

In addition, Doc likes to carve on gun stocks as you can see at the left. Dee and Doc are friends with a World Carving Award winner, Keith Hone who teaches their gun stock relief carving, architectural carving, inlay and wood spirit classes. Keith and other instructors allow Dee to pursue egg shells and wood and Doc to work on knife blades and metal. Dee says, "I would have never dreamed that one little tool could change so much in our life or allow us to meet so many creative and charming people. We are truly lucky." And we say to Dee & Doc, "That cuts both ways. We are so glad to have met these two!"

Doc has another claim to fame. He is the inventor of 'Doc's Egg Suckin' Bucket'. And an amazing invention it is! Here's how he describes it on their site, "Bet ya’ll tried everything imaginable to empty them eggs so ya can use ‘em for decoratin’. You're in LUCK. A New gadget is now available to SUCK those babies clean in a jiffy!! (Well, a hint longer than a jiffy). Just take your infertile eggs (all those rascals from duck to ostrich size), cut a hole in the bottom about the size of a pencil (or larger if ya are suck’n out them biggen’s). Next push a stick, or wire (or one of them fancy big Texas tooth picks that you buy at the General Store) into that hole and stir the innards a bit....enough to break that big yeller yoke. Stick the egg over the egg suck’n hole on Doc’s Original, Soon to be World Famous Egg Suck’n Bucket. Now, be sure that bucket is connected to your vacuum or shop vac. Turn on your vacuum and sluuuurrrrp....the innards are sucked into the bucket!!! (not in your vacuum). Hey, after ya suck them yokes out, ya can suck out your cleanin’ stuff and clear water with that gadget. Now, isn't that amazin? "

Just above are some of the eggs that Dee sculpts. Aren't they amazing? Dee goes on to tell us, "In the last 5 or 10 years in the carving business, we have had a chance to be featured in the Ratite Journal, Compressed Air Magazine, P & I News, Las Vegas Image as well as segments of Aleene's Creative Living (now on Prodigy TV). My "hands" even made it to QVC. The TV segments created a huge interest and curiosity about filming, so we are beginning to pursue making videos of various projects. Since my "eggs pertise" has been carving real egg shells of all sizes, we are making those first, then will branch out into the wood projects. Our first video is the 3 Minute Egg which is a very simple carving on a goose egg."

There's so much to the Dee & Doc story that I have broken the rules and added a second page. I know
you'll enjoy it. Just click here to continue the story.
