OCTOBER WOODWORKER OF THE MONTH
GERALD DENSMORE
SIZE
REALLY DOESN'T MATTER! I used to think so, but that was before my
cousin introduced me to Gerald.
I
used to complain (as I'm sure some of you other woodworkers do) that my
shop was too small and I never seemed to have enough clamps or enough of
the right kind of wood. But then I found the "Woodworking World
of Gerald Densmore".

Gerald lives AND works in his shop. It's located at the White Pines Care Center in Ely, Nevada. To the right you'll find Gerald in his shop and home. He is literally pictured at the "center of his world. Gerald, who is in his 80's, could think of himself as chronologically gifted. Instead, it's all about a new adventure for him, since he only took up woodworking a year ago. Family background does enter in again, since his brother is a hobbyist woodworker.

| Pictured
to the right, is Gerald's workbench and a collection of his tools.
He considers his most useful tool, after his saw, to be his woodrasp. A belt sander is high on his Wish List. (Santa, are you listening?) It all started when boredom prompted Gerald to search his surroundings and his reward was finding some scrap wood. You'll notice that most of the items he has listed on the auction are recycled wood and several are crafted from wood knots in their natural state. He loves all wood, but redwood is his favorite. Check out the redwood sandals he has posted on the auction! |

Gerald spends about eight hours a week at his woodwork. To the right we see that it is 1:38 in the afternoon at Gerald's shop and his supplies are at the ready. It also looks like he has an eye for art and he likes it colorful
just like himself).
Finishes are best when they're shiny, according to Gerald, and he likes to finish with the help of sandpaper and polyurethane.

At one time, Gerald worked in leather and enjoyed boating. The headband he is sporting in the picture to the right and the vest he wears are his work. Now, he's nearly blind and not able to work in leather anymore and he doesn't read books about woodworking for the same reason. He truly has a "feel" for wood and he learns by doing. Advice to beginning woodworkers by Gerald would be "Remember, nothing is impossible!" In addition, he shares this tip "Be slow, careful and think!" I'm not a beginner, but I think I'll pay attention too, because he's
already taught me to be grateful.
