JARRAH
(Eucalyptus marginata; Eucalyptus)

SOURCE Southwest corner of Western Australia.
THE TREE Grows to 30-40 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter. It's bark is red-brown and stringy, but weathers to gray.
COLOR Pinkish red to deep burgundy red. Deep red to red-brown. Paler reddish brown sapwood.
GRAIN Usually straight grained, but can be interlocked or wavy. Sometimes contains fiddle back or curly grain. Occasionally has dry pockets of brown sap. Can have gum veins and boat flecks.
USES Doors and window sills, cabinets, flooring, cross ties, shingles, siding, and chemical vats. Particularly suited for marine applications such as bridges, dock pilings, wharfs and ship building. Used extensively for construction in Australia. Used as a road base at one time.
POSITIVE PROPERTIES Heavy, hard and strong. Highly decay resistant heartwood. Very termite and rot resistant (with the exception of rootrot fungus - Phytophthara Cinnamon). Works well, requires sharp tools on the curly grain. Steam bends moderately well. Turns easily. Glues and finishes well. Takes a high polish. Poor burning qualities. Seasons well with some shrinkage.
NEGATIVE PROPERTIES Old growth Jarrah has been seriously depleted. Regrowth Jarrah is a small percentage of available timber. Suffers from rootrot fungus. Can be difficult to work due to dense hardness. Required pre-drill for nails and screws.
