JARRAH
(Eucalyptus marginata; Eucalyptus)

| THE
TREE |
Grows
to 30-40 meters in height and 2 meters in diameter. It's bark is red-brown
and stringy, but weathers to gray. |
| COLOR |
Pinkish
red to deep burgundy red. Deep red to red-brown. Paler reddish brown sapwood. |
| GRAIN |
Usually
straight grained, but can be interlocked or wavy. Sometimes contains fiddle
back or curly grain. Occasionally has dry pockets of brown sap. Can have
gum veins and boat flecks. |
| USES |
Doors
and window sills, cabinets, flooring, cross ties, shingles, siding, and
chemical vats. Particularly suited for marine applications such as bridges,
dock pilings, wharfs and ship building. Used extensively for construction
in Australia. Used as a road base at one time. |
| POSITIVE
PROPERTIES |
Heavy,
hard and strong. Highly decay resistant heartwood. Very termite and rot
resistant (with the exception of rootrot fungus - Phytophthara Cinnamon).
Works well, requires sharp tools on the curly grain. Steam bends moderately
well. Turns easily. Glues and finishes well. Takes a high polish. Poor
burning qualities. Seasons well with some shrinkage. |
| NEGATIVE
PROPERTIES |
Old
growth Jarrah has been seriously depleted. Regrowth Jarrah is a small
percentage of available timber. Suffers from rootrot fungus. Can be difficult
to work due to dense hardness. Required pre-drill for nails and screws. |
