GUSTAV KLIMT
(1862 - 1918)

Gustav Klimt didn't start painting until age thirty.  Before that, he along with his brother and a friend did decoration for several theatres.  Five years later, he was one of the founders of the
Vienna Secession, but then eight years later he quit, dismayed over the trend toward
naturalism.  His work's sensual tone drew violent criticism.  Now and then his work was
displayed behind a screen to protect young people.  Klimt covered a wide range of subjects
such as sleep, hope and death to name a few.  Klimt's figures were strongly
influenced by the Byzantine art period.
