AFRICAN MAHOGANY

SOURCE West tropical Africa. Found on the edges between rainforest and savanna. Ranges from the coast of Guinea to Cameroon, east through the Congo basin to Uganda and some areas of Sudan.
THE TREE Can reach a height of 100 feet with a diameter of approximately 36 inches. The bole is not as well formed as other mahogany.
COLOR Heartwood is pink brown, but darkens to dark red brown with a purple tinge when exposed. It is generally darker than other commercial mahogany. The sapwood is slightly lighter.
GRAIN Interlocked grain very prominent and produces a striped effect. It's texture is medium to fairly coarse.
USES Furniture, cabinets, interiors, turnings and interior accents.
POSITIVE PROPERTIES Heartwood resistant to termites. Moderately durable. Responds well to nailing, boring, carving, mortising and plaining. Polishing is good. Pre treatment is recommended for gluing. Easy to rout and works well with hand tools if they are sharp. Easy to dry. Seasons rapidly with little degrade. Takes varnish well.
NEGATIVE PROPERTIES May contain crystal deposits. Tension wood may cause splitting or warping. Sharp tools will prevent "wooly" effect. Sapwood resistant to preservative. Longhorn post beetles like the sapwood. Has a faint odor when worked.
