Georgia O'Keeffe's work
wavers between abstract and realistic. Actually, she felt abstractions
could too easily be misinterpreted. Frequently, she tested her psychological
and physical endurance by exploring the fringes of civilization. Georgia
O'Keeffe took pleasure in Chinese and Japanese art. Very often, she
oversized her subjects, making them dramatic with color. Even her charcoals
display deep contrast. She said she carried shapes around in her mind,
until she found appropriate colors for them. O'Keeffe loved the Southwest
and wrote, "You know I never feel at home in the East like I do out here and
finally feeling in the right place again - I feel like myself - and I like
it". Eventually, she increased her scale to include a six foot wide
painting and a twenty-four foot wide Sky Above Clouds. Her highest
personal mark for her work was her initials with a star on the back of a painting.
