PABLO PICASSO
(1882 - 1973)

Pablo Picasso was born October 26, 1881 in Malaga, Spain, to Jose Ruiz, an artist, and his wife Maria
Picasso.  He first became famous for his role in the development of Cubism. At fourteen, Picasso
completed the one month qualifying examination for the Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona in one day.
Following this, he attended the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid.  1900 found him back in Barcelona
where he spent a lot of time at the city's cabaret for intellectuals and artists, Els Quatre Gats.  1901 to 1904
is known as Picasso's "blue period". This was due to the blue tone of his paintings.  A radical change occurred
in 1905 and 1906 when he became fascinated with circus figures and most of his paintings were subtle
pinks and grays, highlighted by other colors. Picasso designed the set and costumes for Serge Diaghilev's
ballet Parade in 1917.  In the 1920's Picasso painted in Cubist, Classical and Surreal modes. He pioneered
wrought iron sculpture from 1929 to 1931.  During the 1930's he did a large quantity of graphic illustrations. The painting
Guernica
was Picasso' resopnse to the April, 1937 saturation bombing of Guernica, Spain by the Nazi Luftwaffe.  World War II
found him living in Paris and devoting his time to ceramics. In the 1960's he created a huge fifty foot sculpture for the
Chicago Civic Center.  In 1970 over 800 of Picasso's works were donated to the Berengeur de Aguilar Palace Museum
in Barcelona.  Picasso was 91 when he died on April 8, 1973 in Mougins, France.
