VINCENT VAN GOGH
(1869 - 1890)

Vincent Van Gogh was born near Brabant, Netherlands, as the son of a minister.  Van Gogh tried various
careers as clerk in an art gallery, a schoolmaster and even trained as a minister, before turning to art. He
was mostly self-taught.  Early works from Van Gogh are rather clumsy and muddy.  After moving to Paris
in 1886, he discovered color.  The works such as Sunflowers reflect the reds and yellows of the Mediterranean
which he discovered while living in Arles, France in 1888.  Gauguin joined him there briefly, but an argument between the two led to the famous mutilation of Van Gogh's ear.  Van Gogh committed himself to the St. Remy Asylum in 1889 and his work produced there was at first softer, mainly mauves and pinks, but his brushstrokes show increased agitation.  In 1890, he moved to Auvers to be closer to his beloved brother Theo.  He died having sold only one piece of his work, which followed closely on the heels of a botched
suicide attempt.
